Lace is delicate openwork fabric that adds graceful yet pretty detail. Threads are twisted braided and looped to create intricate patterns containing both solid, gauzy and near transparent sections. Lace-making has evolved over hundreds, possibly thousands of years - there are even biblical references to lace in the Book of Exodus. The 15th and 16th Centuries saw the development of true lace. True lace requires that the openwork lace fabric was not woven attached to any sort of backing fabric, although it may be layered over solid fabrics for various clothing and decoration. The delicate beauty of lace and the skill required to create is by hand have lead to rich lace-making traditions in Europe. In particular Spain, Ireland, Russia and Germany have lace-making traditions of elaborate techniques and wonderful historical lace examples. Chantilly lace, Irish and Nottingham lace are all highly sought after varieties.

Lace was originally made from silk, linen and even gold and silver threads. Most modern lace is made from cotton thread and is more durable and easy to wear, without sacrificing the intricate structure and beautiful patterns possible in this fabric. Lace makes a pretty border and is great for embellishment, adding a finishing touch to pieces.
